conceived in response to the lock down of exhibition venues due to the Corona Pandemic. It was first exhibited at Julia Ritterskamp, Duesseldorf and is since ongoing.&nbsp; 100 photographic works are available for Holding Pattern, divided into three categories: Transport, Patterns, Landscape.For the duration of 8 weeks visitors can choose a photographic work, take it with them and install it in their homes.The works are 30 x 40 cm in size.There is no rental fee. In return a high res installation image of the work in the private space must be provided. Japan Foundation, Cologne made of paper mache, styrofoam, color copies, laminated photographs, glazed ceramics. Dimensions variable. The handrail was installed at Japan Foundation Cologne and tailored to the impressive staircase, which connects the entrance area with the upper floor. The building was originally designed by the Japanese architect Yoshimi Ohashi and is furnished with traditional materials such as wood and concrete. The space has large windows and&nbsp; is dominated by warm earth tones in grey, brown and white The handrail is made up of paper mache coated with images of underwater landscapes, fishes, corals and seaplants. With its bright colours and organic shapes the handrail poses a strong contrast to its surroundings. The photographic images for the handrail were taken in the Berlin Aquarium and represent an analogy to photography. Being in an aquarium reminded me of looking at a photographic images: you can grasp it visually but you are stopped at the glass surface. Behind the glass it is a space that is uncertain in depth. Like a parallel world, it exists as part of the space you inhabit, but still you are not a part of it. The piece uses framing and focus as the classic tools of lens based vision to generate new perspectives and confuse our perception of space and scale.The installation consists of a site specific framing of window space and a HD-Video. The video shows coloured pieces of pape moving amongst each other. The focus of the video camera gradually shifts between fore-, middle- and background continuously confusing the scale and perception of space. The video runs in a semi-dark room complemented with cut-outs on a window front.The cut-outs appear as cinematographic images themselves and correspond with the video. Depending on the viewers standpoint in the room the cut outs show different framed clips from the world outside the exhibtion space. /> Ambigious Spaces (2003 - 2008) C-Prints, dimensions variable The photographic image seems to be inseparably linked to two questions: “When was this taken?” and “Where is it?” The convention of reading photography as documentation obscures the fact that the photographic image is first and foremost a construction, no matter how realistic it may look like. Other than a painting or drawing , photography is rarely reviewed as the fantastic image it is.Photography is a medium with a flat surface and any space depicted in it can only be suggested. The process of transformation that takes place once a three-dimensional space in front of the camera is transformed into a two-dimensional image is determined by colours, reflections, transparent or semi-transparent elements etc.&nbsp;They create a depth of field or on the contrary stress the flatness of the photographic image. Scale, perspective, the flatening or deepining functions of different lenses, the accentuation of fore-or background and digital manipulation are the tools to suggest space in the medium of photography, that will nevertheless always remain two-dimensional.Independent of their origins all the photographs in “Ambigious Spaces” talk about these very basic decisions when constructing an image. Through the strong formal composition that traverses all works in this series the viewer can glance through a realistic fog onto the image. Not knowing what path the water takes the search for the underlying forms andtheir meaning is what possibly describes this work best. There are moments of clearness when the hidden matters touch thesurface and become visible. The video sequences deal with basic structures, repetitive themes, universal and timeless patterns.
